eBay Selling Fees, Explained Simply

'Fees are too high' — that complaint comes when the math wasn't done first. Learn the fees, price accordingly, and the profit takes care of itself.

The short answer

Understand three fees: (1) Insertion (listing) fee: your first 250 listings every month are FREE; a small per-listing charge applies after that. (2) Final value fee: charged when an item SELLS — in most categories roughly 13-14% of the total sale (a little up or down by category) plus a small fixed per-order amount. (3) Promoted listings (optional): an extra % only when an ad-driven sale happens — fully in your control.

A real example — a $30 sale

This is rough math — always confirm your category's current fees in Seller Hub, because fees change over time. The real point: losses happen when the price was set without counting fees.

The right pricing formula

Price = supplier cost + eBay fees + your profit. Work backwards: from your selling price, subtract fees and cost — what remains is truly yours. If nothing remains, that product is not for you, no matter how well it sells.

Fear the fees, or understand them?

A physical shop has rent too — and there you must find your own customers. eBay's fee buys you customers from all over the world who arrived ready to buy. Treat the fee as rent — just do the math first.

⚠️ Don't trust old fee videos

Fees change a little every year. A 2023-24 video's math will be wrong today. Always check the current fees in your own Seller Hub.

Frequently asked questions

Does eBay charge me if nothing sells?

Not for your first 250 listings each month. Beyond that, a small insertion fee can apply whether the item sells or not. A store subscription also has a monthly charge — as a beginner, you don't need one.

Are promoted listings (ads) compulsory?

No. It is an optional fee — charged only when a sale comes through the ad. As a new seller, first fix your listing organically; ads cannot rescue a weak listing.

Are fees different for Indian vs US accounts?

Fees depend on the marketplace (ebay.com) and category, not your country. Your payout conversion through Payoneer has its own charges — count those in too.
